Layovers pre-intl flights

Gang - is there a required minimum layover for an aircraft in a US hub before it can depart for an international location. Somehow I'm remembering like 3 hours so to allow for security sweep. But maybe that's when the flight comes IN from an international location. In other words, if Delta flew an A330 to JFK from Atlanta, and that plane was to then to go from JFK to an international location, is there a min amount of time that plane needs to be in JFK before departing.

Aren't some foreign carrier planes on the ground in the U.S. only 2 or maybe 2 1/2 hours before turning around and heading back? I'm thinking that time on the ground has more to do with scheduling and aircraft size but could be wrong.

I am often surprised how quick some foreign aircraft turnarounds are at JFK. Many's the time I will say "Didn't that just get here?".

Not sure there is any statutory time limit, but you can't start boarding the outbound crew and passengers until after it's released by customs, so if you cut it too close and they get backed up you'll be in trouble.

It would probably depend on the size of the plane and the distance the planes travel. It takes quite a bit of time to deboard a a wide body, clean it, restock catering, and board passengers for the next flight. At IAH TK turns its 77W's in about 2 hours. That's probably about as fast as a plane that size can be turned around. It arrives and departs at off peak periods, and landing and takeoff slots aren't a problem.

Delta has 1.5 hr quick turn times for the A330-300 going from intl to intl

I remember AA turning a plane around in one hour at PVG. The incoming flight was severely delayed and I was a passenger for the outbound segment. I told myself no way we will depart in an hour when I saw the incoming plane pulling into the gate.

I had a 47 minute scheduled connection in Atlanta connecting between BWI and EZE with no issues

Sometimes an aircraft has to be towed to another stand, and so possibly putting pressure on the dispatcher getting the flight away on time.

The question is actually wrongly put. The issue is not pre but post-intl flights. Customs can take its time to check an incoming aircraft (not so much an outgoing one). Of course, before it has been cleared, it cannot be boarded, nor catered, cargo loaded or crewed, for a domestic flight. This is nothing specific for the US, but essentially works the same way in all (or most) countries.

In what does customs for planes consist of exactly?? I have knew this was a thing at all!

Here's a wrinkle for you...ETOPS pre-departure checks.

Twin engined aircraft have to go through an ETOPS pre-departure check which is more rigorous than a normal pre-departure check. Our normal check takes between 30 and 45 minutes. The ETOPS check takes about an hour and a half. Further, the APU needs to be run for at least 30 minutes prior to departure.

I worked International Terminal Maintenance in SFO, We had to turn mostly 747's for United, Singapore, EVA, Lufthansa, Air China ,China Airlines and Japan Airlines, and that was on Swing shift. Day shift turned "everybody and their Cousin". and? Our 10 International departures.
