T/O Run: Grooved vs. not, concrete vs. asphalt

Mon Feb 11, 2019 8:08 am

I can't imagine there are significant takeoff distances on a dry runway of the aforementioned runway types that would factor into calculations...

Specifically, I'd be interested if there are any appreciable distance on grooved vs. non-grooved runways (I'm guessing grooved runways add a little bit of friction).

With asphalt being softer than concrete (especially on hot days), are there any appreciable differences there?
"..your eyes will be forever turned skyward, for there.." yeah we know the DaVinci quote. But GA is so dang expensive these days! :(

Makes no difference at all with dry runway. Wet is a different story.

Asphalt in comparison to concrete is more elastic ( and flows under enough force where concrete breaks up ).
And isn't grooving done for improving on drainage?

Grooving is for drainage, and a wet runway can use dry numbers (depending on aircraft) if grooved. Standing water is another matter. The difference shows up in a rejected takeoff.
