B787 Go around

Interesting video on BBC of a BA 787 performing a go around at Heathrow due to cross winds, one for the techies. When a go around is called is it good old fashion flying or with FBW technology is there a one button operation to initiate the go around, Just interested

Afaik there is no plane in production that does fly the go around itself, so going around, pressing the TOGA switch means automatic A/P disconnect and hand flying.

After gear up you would select new A/P modes and reengage the A/P.

At my company, the usual procedure for wind shear will be for maximum thrust, and then to fly to go-around procedure, usually by hand until the level off altitude, which is usually FL050.

Usually, a normal go-around would only require climb thrust, usually 1800-2500fpm, which is one click and two-click would give you maximum thrust.

The E-170 series do AP coupled go-arounds.

That’s not correct. Pushing to TO/GA switch does not automatically disconnect the autopilot on the 787. Nor does it do so on the 747, 757, 767, or 777. Only some 737 variants do that. It’s entirely possible for the Autopilot to fly a go-around.

You also don’t have to select new A/P modes. The 787 has TO/GA to LNAV. You may select a different pitch mode unless the ALT mode engages due to reaching MCP altitude.

Not sure where you heard that, but it’s not accurate.

This is incorrect for all the buses. That’s the A320/30/40/50/80. In production since the late 1980s.

All the 737’s that have auto land capability have the ability to do auto go around not just the few that have rollout.

Thanks. I remembered it was something like that. Didn't remember the exact details. I don't know the 737 as well as the other models. Of course all current production 737s have autoland capability - either Fail Passive or Fail Operational.

And it’s an outstanding feature, lowering workload significantly during a maneuver
that is rarely done in airline service
