Dash 8 Q400 VS Jet

Fri Mar 22, 2019 10:04 pm

Hi everyone,

Largest operators of the Dash 8 Q400 are located in Nothern America (Horizon, Jazz, Porter, etc).
After a recent read of a Leeham article "Regional Operation with the Turboprop, Prop-jet or jet" (https://leehamnews.com/2015/02/08/regio ... e-analyze/) I discover the "versatility" of the Dash 8 Q400 in terms of Cruise speed.
When cruising on High Speed mode (350 knots) on a sector of 300 NM the Dash 8 Q400 flight duration is 10 minutes longer than a regional jet (66 mins for the jet vs 76 mins for the Dash 8 Q400).

I did some research but didn't find as I'm in Europe and here only Flybee in the UK is a large operator of the Dash 8 Q400.

Does in Nothern America, on some flight routes the Dash 8 Q400 is competiting against B737 or A320? And if yes, can you guys tell me those routes and the airlines?

Many thanks.

Can you fly at takeoff speed all the way until descent? Would this be effective for turbo props?
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

Thats not quite how it works. Aircraft have high drag at both low and high speeds. At high speed it is pretty obvious, but at low speed you get lift induced drag. They typically fly at or about an optimum speed in between, where drag is at the lowest. I dont have the manuals with me, but for the Q400 i believe the minimum drag speed was somewhere around 270 knots. Any less, and induced drag will start penalizing you.

In Canada, absolutely. Without looking up details, I can give examples that I have personally flown:

From Toronto to anywhere that Porter (PD) flies... such as YUL, YOW, NYC (LGA or EWR), Chicago (either ORD or MID), from YYZ or YTZ. PD and sometimes WJ fly the Q400, WJ flies the 737 and UA and AC fly the 320 as well as other types - in the case of AC, it could be E-170, E-190, CR-900, A319, 321 (or in the case of YYZ-YUL or YYZ-YWO A330, B767, B777 or even B787).

or, some specific airport pairs:

YYZ to YUL - 320 (and other types, AC), 737 or Q 400 (WJ)
YUL-YHZ, 320 (and other types, AC), 737 (WJ), Q400 PD
YOW-YHZ: 320 (and other types, AC), 737 (WJ), Q400 PD
YHZ-YYT: 320 (and other types, AC), 737 (WJ), Q400 PD

I'm sure there are many similar examples out of YUL and YOW and even more out west...
