Ilyushin Il-62 range

Wed Mar 27, 2019 5:52 pm

According to multiple news source two Russian military planes landed in Venezuela a few days ago, an Autonov 124 and a Ilyushin Il-62. What intrigues me is the range of Ilyshin iI-62 which I always though was kind of similar to the B727. I'm guessing this thing had to fly the Barents and Norwegian Sea, then the Atlantic to reach Venezuela. Does this plane have this much range ? or how did it get to there ?

???
B727-200 Advanced: 4,720 km
Il-62: 9,200 km
Il-62M: 10,000 km

How would a quadjet have a similar range to a small trijet?

IL-62M still air service range is about 5400nm... quite a bit more than the 727-200ADV (2550nm)

DME-CCS is 5381nm... tight but they may have stopped at or come from a military base closer to CCS. Murmansk for example would shave 300nm off.
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

I've always thought of the IL-62 as more comparable to VC-10, 707 or DC-8 than to the 727. It is a long-range quad.

According to some sources I saw, they stopped in Syria and Dakar.
But an Il-62's range is more comparable to the 707s/DC-8s than the 727s though.

It has nothing to do with quad vs trijet; the Il-62 was a long-haul airliner, the 727 was a short- to medium-haul airliner.

As others have said, the Il-62 was comparable to the VC-10, 707 & DC-8; all are narrow-body long-haul airliners.

When I was in Pyongyang in mid-2012, a Cubana Il-62M appeared out of nowhere and stood on the ramp the next morning :eyepopping:
Would love to find out what route they picked to ferry the airplane HAV-FNJ. Guess it must have been across the Atlantic and then via Russia.

Unfortunately at that time there was no FR24 coverage to verify.

Loran
