Differences Dash 8 & Dash 8 NEXTGEN

Fri Mar 29, 2019 4:15 pm

Hi everyone,

I did some researches regarding the difference between the Dash 8 Q400 and the Dash 8 Q400 NEXTGEN. Here are below according to some pages the updates on the NEXTGEN

Q400NextGen
Version of the Q400 with updated cabins, lighting, windows, overhead bins, landing gear, as well as reduced fuel and maintenance costs.

I'm looking for the information regarding the reduced fuel consumption and the maintenance costs? Does anyone have some datas about those reductions?

Many thanks.

After some researches, I found out that its only a cosmetic update :
Led Cabin lights
Overhead bins that Can fit IATA standards cabin bags
New slim seats
They increase the C Cheks intervall

Performance And fuel burn remains the same

The differences between the Dash 8 and Dash 8 NEXTGEN are very small....

For example, we have the "Q" series, which implements a Noice and Vibration supression system, and some interior updates as well.

The ANVS (active noise and vibrations supression system) works by putting a low frequency sound through the speakers of the cabin, which cancels out much of the noise on the Dash 8. (the Q400 is by far the quietest turboprop in the sky) and also has a system that cancels out much of the vibrations on the aircraft. A normal Dash 8 takeoff sound in the cabin would be about 104DB, (which is considered very unsafe), while a Dash 8 equipped with the ANVS would be roughly about 85DB. (still very loud considering the jet aircraft), and the vibrations would be very obvious on the Dash 8 with no ANVS (so bad that your drinks could possibly spill), and one with it would barely have any vibrations at all.

As for the decorations on the interior, better lights and AC are added to the cabin, as well as better overhead bin space. The old AC's on the aircraft were extremely bad...….however the updated versions are much better.

Many airlines continue to operate the Dash's with the original systems, not the newer. Airlines such as Air Canada use the original Dash 8's, not the NEXTGEN. Clearly many airlines would choose the NEXTGEN over the original, due to the rising fuel cost, however for some airlines, it is simply too much money to operate the NEXTGEN aircraft, (such as the Q100, Q200, Q300, Q400) so they just operate with the orignal aircraft with the original systems, engines AC's etc...

Hope that helps.

Very interesting. Thanks.

Would be curious To have a comparison regarding the cabin noise with a Jet.

Do you guys have an idea if some Q400 "classic" operators did refurbish some of their aircraft to get the NEXT GEN cabin?
If so, could you give some examples please?

Also, if a such refurbishing / cabin conversion program exist, do you guys have roughly an idea about the cost to convert a Classic cabin to a NEXT GEN ? (so mainly overhead bins, lighting, galley, slimline seats)

Many thanks

No such thing. Not to piss on your parade but the ATR-500/600 series is VASTLY quieter, and offers a VASTLY superior passenger comfort and cabin experience. The Q400-even in NG iteration- is a pretty crude, pax-unfriendly, beast. Heck, even the old Fokker-50 is more comfortable.

Pax Experiences (cabin, noise, comfort) on the Q400 seems to vary from a pax to another. To have more details about your feedback, can you let us know what Q400 carriers you flown?

FlyBE, Airberlin, Austrian, Spicejet, Augsburg Airways, SAS, Olympic... I could go on, I'm probably forgetting some... Royal Jordanian...

C'mon, the Q400 is a pretty lame aircraft to fly on. No comparison to the ATR 500/600. The Q400 interior panels plastics are brittle and vibrate like crazy, most seats are thin and hard, cabin fittings quality is pretty bad. The interior of the ATR looks as if it's coming from another planet. No to mention how quiet it is.

I can't speak to the newer ATR since I've only been on old -72's, but he's right about the F50. I flew on both the Mayair F50 and Eurolot Q400 within the last month and the old Fokker was certainly as comfortable and quiet - surprised me.

The ATR 72 I flew on earlier this year was so noisy you couldn't hear yourself think, it was pretty bad. I find the Q400 much quieter.
L101, 733/4/5/8, 741/2/3 (never managed 744!), MD 80/2/3/8/90, MD11, DHC8/3/Q4, E170, E195, 757, 77W, 763/4, Travel Air 2000. A300/310, A319/320/321, A333, ATR-72, probably a few others I forget. Passenger, not pilot, alas! BUD based.
