Flight School Recommendations in Melbourne, Australia

Tue Apr 02, 2019 5:25 am

Hi folks, been helping a relative work thru a list of potential Flight Schools for a Commercial Pilot Training Course in the Melbourne region. As of now some of the schools that i'm seeing are

1. MELBOURNE FLIGHT TRAINING

2. CAE OXFORD

3. SOAR AVIATION

4. LEARN TO FLY

5. ROYAL VICTORIAN AERO CLUB

Course duration's seem to vary from 12 months – 15 months.

And course fees also seem to vary considerably from school to school.

Any recommendations on any other flights schools outside of Melbourne, but within Australia and potentially even New Zealand would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Would be looking all around including the US and airline cadet programs. When speaking to these schools ask to speak to students that graduated and find out what the employment was like afterwards.

Getting your first 1500 hrs of experience is the key. There are many green CPL holders with no experience that cannot find work.

Some schools can get you directly into an airline or a CPL and 1500 hrs within 2 years.

Hear good things about MFT, and Royal Vic.
Avoid CAE Oxford, I’ve got stories from personal experience I don’t want to share on a public forum.

Sunstate Aviation in Kissimmee, Florida. Informal ambiance but serious about training.

I haven't flown with any of those schools, but I have had a long conversation with the CEO of Melbourne Flight Training and he left a very good impression on me. Seemed genuinely invested in your training and not like he is just after your money.

Soar has a reputation for being the opposite. I don't know if it is deserved but in any case I wouldn't recommend the sports aircraft they force you to train on.

If you go to Sydney then Curtis Aviation is a good outfit.

Ultimately it will quite likely be cheaper to train in the US and convert the licence here when you're done, conversion will only involve a couple of exams and a flight test. And of course if your goal is the airlines then explore their cadet routes first.
