### Jet Bridges to service two different aircraft?

Are there jet bridges that that break off into a Y formation for servicing two planes at once? I could see this working for small terminals with space constraints.

It really wouldn't save space since the deciding factor in how close planes can park is wingspan. Also, one plane would board from the left door and the other from the right.

American has a number of gates at DFW where one entrance breaks off into two jetways; some of them, back in the day, were used where widebodies boarded from L1 and L2 (747's and DC10's).

The concourse designer lays out to have a standard Jet Bridge down the length, but often at corners it gets difficult. Widebody gates are easy to fit there but if just NB's the use of a fixed bridge section down to a Y is a good solution. As Superjeff noted the layout to do the L1 & L2 is still used. Because of the corner the planes are turned about 120 degrees to each other to take the least space.

There are also some on F and G at ORD. The F ones may have been widebody gates, but G (in its current incarnation) was purpose built for RJs.

Gate C21-22 at CLE might be what you're talking about? Take a look at this aerial shot of the "banjo" end of the C concourse.

Gates F11/F15 and F10/F12 at MIA do this, and gates F14/F16/F18/F20 and F17/F19/F21/F23 take it to the next level by effectively breaking off into two Ys.

Yes, Tel Aviv airport does.

Thanks for the photo, I knew I had seen one in the past but can't remember where. A good way to add 2 gate positions at small terminals.

I feel like this is actually pretty common.

In Japan and maybe other places, they have "permanent" jet bridges that then split off to service two airplanes - so you leave from one of two gates into a common jetway, then split off to your plane. Like this:

You can see that that gate is labeled 67L, 67, and 67R. You can fit two narrowbodies or one widebody in there.

In Canada, YHZ has a pair of these and the old YOW terminal had one...I think that the two loading bridges in YQM’s old terminal were like that too. I think YEG used to have one too.

FRA concourse A/Z gates although mostly used by LH's WB's can also serve 2 NB's at the same time

I believe this is done in Singapore as well. I've been in gate lounges where there are passengers from two separate flights departing within 20 minutes of each other and the plane outside the window was not the one I was taking. It's probably one of the A380 gates.

Yes done at many airports, a gate can have three markings, like 26,26A,26B. The whole number is for single use gate, the A and B allow the gate to be used by two narrow bodies, each with a bridge.

### Dual Use Gates at Airports

Forgive me if this is the wrong place. I'm looking for some pictures of dual use gates at airports like they have at Heathrow T2. I'm referring to the kind of gate which can hold either a single widebody or two narrowbodies. Also is there a proper name for such a set up?

Seattle has gate S3/S3A and S2. If a widebody plane is parked in at S3A, then the bridge at S2 cannot be used as the wing of the wide body is usually just about 10-15 feet infront of it. After the Delta international push around 12-13:30 local, both gates are run domestic (normally) or rather narrow body planes.

I think there are two types of gates that we are talking about here: there's what looks like a dual jet bridge wide body gate, but can also be used for two narrow bodies (see LHR, JFK, etc), and then there are the gates where they throw a wide body line over two narrow body gates (48X at LAX, H16X at ORD, etc).

Hamburg has two of them.

They can hold either one plane with maximum size of an A380 or two planes of the size of a 737 or 32X maximum.
On Google Maps you see a 777 parked at the one Gate and two A320s parked on the other one for a perfect comparison.

Most of the other Gates are sized to have a 757 and an A310 next to each other alternately. There are additional lines/positions for widebodies. When one Gate is used by a widebody the adjacent "standard" position to one side is blocked.

LAS used to have a few gates at the A/B terminals that could have 1 widebody or two regional jets (HP would split them for the night hub). SFO gate 84 is currently being used by 4 CRJ2s when but is 777/747 capable.
