UAL 804 NRT->IAD Diversion to CLE

Thu May 30, 2019 7:52 pm

Twice this month I have seen UAL 804 divert to CLE due to thunderstorms at IAD. Both times, PIT was a closer airport at the time of diversion and PIT would have made the continuation flight shorter (PIT->IAD vs CLE->IAD). Why then does this flight divert to CLV instead of PIT? TIA.

Probably because United has a much larger operation at CLE than PIT, including crew bases that would make logistical concerns easier to address. The flight times between CLE-IAD and PIT-IAD are negligible.
