Flight tomorrow mid-day delayed for maintenance

Sun Jun 02, 2019 9:41 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm new on this site- looking forward to getting to know everyone, and I hope that this post isn't off-base.

I have a flight tomorrow mid-day on American, from a hub to a smaller airport. The inbound flight before mine is on time, but my flight is already delayed by 59 minutes for maintenance.

In decades of frequent flying, I've never seen a flight for the following day already delayed for maintenance, but with the inbound flight that turns into the delayed flight not delayed. I'm guessing that some kind of maintenance is already just being scheduled, but it seems odd to have that maintenance scheduled for during the day.

Would you go ahead and switch to another flight- i.e., would this delayed flight likely end up being delayed by more time? Clearly a 59 minute delay is just a guesstimate by the airline.

It’s all a guess. It’s probably delayed based on parts being moved to make the fix at the hub. The airline knows where and what time it’s arriving plus install time. Are they right? Time will tell.

59 minutes seems pretty specific. Sounds regulatory, which typically means a flight crew problem. But, it’s posted as maintenance, so a small mystery. I know that if I was going to give an estimate for some scheduled maintenance, I would round up to the nearest 15 mins based on the programmed time for that task.

Thinking it through a little bit, American’s maintenance & engineering group may have some internal metrics that make a forecasted 60 minute delay undesirable.

Or, American may have some process that they don’t want to execute quite yet. Something like:

if est. delay 15 mins, do “x”, if 30 do “x” + “y”, if 60...
When seconds count...the police are minutes away.
Unless it's expressly prohibited, it's allowed.

I once tried to out-smart the system and get home early by dashing to ATL, turn in car, get to the gate for the earlier flight to BDL. Delayed by maintenance, pushed 30 minutes after my original flight, returned to ATL from overhead CLT for repeat maintenance problem. Got home at 2am, six hours later than the original flight arrived on schedule. Last time I tried to lead pursuit an airline schedule.
