Chicago TRACON controlled airspace dimensions

Sun Jun 23, 2019 6:06 pm

Can anyone tell me what the lateral and vertical dimensions of controlled airspace are for Chicago TRACON? Where one can expect a handoff from /to Center on arrivals/ departures. Thanks.

I don't think anybody is going to give you definitive answers. You'd best be served by examining the charts, sectionals, hi and low and determining the airspace class and sectors. SkyVector.com is a good site with charts.

Ultimately, if flying on an IFR flight plan, ATC will tell you when to change frequencies to another sector or approach. They don't always line up exactly with the charts.

It’s not a secret. Your best asking this question on pointsixtyfive which is an ATC forum.

Chicago ARTCC owns the space and, Letters of Agreement, assigns airspace to Chicago TRACON including specifying hand off points, frequencies, airspeed/altitude restrictions. These can be quite complex and not in the public domain. An ATC forum might be willing to answer specific questions.

If you look on the public FAA website they have a not great picture of C90’s airspace in an article about STARS. I tried to post the pic but I can’t. Chicago Tracon is bordered by Milwaukee Tracon on the north, almost on the Wisconsin/Illinois border. Rockford is to the west. I don’t know for sure but it’s in the vicinity of the KRENA intersection. To the south it would be in the vicinity of Joliet VOR and Kankakee. To the east in the vicinity of Chesterton. Sorry it’s been a while since I lived up there. There are the fixes ATC would give to avoid the class B as Chicago Tracon does not accept IFR overflights. This is a general guide. All ATC facilities have dozens and dozens sectors and shelves. It’s not necessarily a square or circle. I believe C90 owns up to 13000ft. Maybe 15000. As far as a handoff, whenever the next sector takes the flash, and all traffic conflicts are resolved, the controller will switch you. Again, it’s not necessarily the same spot everytime.

Here is a link from the public FAA website that has some pics. Although it’s not up to date; in fact it’s from the old O’Hare layout, I would guess the diagrams that show the airspace are still relatively accurate.
