Taxied back to the gate and pushed back again?

Sat Jul 27, 2019 2:59 am

I'm on AS1206 right now (SFO-ORD, N852VA). Before the door was closed, the captain announced that there would be a short delay as the APU was inop and that we were going to do a cart start prior to pushback. OK, no issues there.

So the #2 engine starts up and we push back. And then...we taxied right back to the gate, but the jetway. I thought we weren't going to ORD but the jetway didn't extend and not 60 seconds later we were pushing back again and taxied out to the runway as if nothing happened.

Any idea what was going on? I've never had that happen before.

Couldn’t cross-bleed start, so went back to gate to use the start cart, is my guess. Perhaps traffic was too tight to allow for the jet blast.

Here are several possible scenarios from my experiences flying. There is far too little information given to narrow it down to any one cause.

1/ Got clearance to pushback, then the ramp controller / ground controller changed their mind when he took too long and asked him to go back to the stand, to allow other priority traffic to pass.

2/ Got clearance to push back and found out there was a ground stop / flow control / metering for his route, pulled back into the gate. Then the problem was quickly sorted out, and they were allowed to push again.

3/ Got clearance from Ramp control to push back, but they pushed out of the ‘non movement’ area into Ground controllers turf and had to quickly return as no clearance was a received from the agency actually in control of that area. THis can happen if the gate is the last one on the border of Ramp’s turf and Ground control’s turf, and the pushback was accidentally wrong direction.

4/ Simply pushed back wrong direction and had to pull onto the gate to turn around correctly. Maybe due to misunderstood clearance “Tail North vs. Facing North” etc.

5/ Pushed off the gate and got some kind of maintenance message. Pulled back onto stand only to find out (over the radio or cellphone) that it was a simple thing to fix by resetting a circuit, or even that the problem was a result of their mistake. They quickly fix it and push back again. It’s embarrassing so no explanation provided.

Pick one, or make up your own scenarios! THese have all happened to me at one time or another.

Probably pulled back in to let other traffic in that had been waiting. Happens sometimes.

Taxied back, or pulled back in? Not sure of ramp procedures in SFO, but it could be possible that the access door for the air cart was left open, so they pulled back in, dealt with it, and pushed again. Around here, it’d be no big deal for the dude to walk out and deal with it, but different airports have different rules.

Many airlines have the Ramp guys do the pushbacks and sometimes they get antsy, for AS the Air service door has to be secured after an air start is accomplished
they could bave pushed without the door being secured by the Mechanics.
