Why does the horizontal stabilizer of a Dash 8 droop?

Sun Aug 04, 2019 8:09 pm

While looking at the Dash 8 family, I noticed that the -100 and -300 family of planes horizontal stabilizer attached to the tail always droops while on the ground, but not while airborne...…

I did not notice this on the Q400 family....

Thanks

It probably uses control tabs, the same way an MD series aircraft could have flight controls pointing every which way due to wind. Once the airspeed builds the surface goes neutral and then the control tabs control it.

see that thread for more about the system.

Q400 has a hydraulic elevator and rudder. That’s why it doesn’t droop on the ground when the hydraulic systems are online.

Are you talking about the horizontal stabilizer itself or the elevators attached to the rear of the stabilizer? Usually the elevators sag after a while when there is no hydraulic pressure.

All the Dash 8s have a control lock that will hold the ailerons wings level and elevator nose down while engaged. The lock is usually always engaged while on ground.
