DFW to AMS changed to 777-300

Sun Aug 11, 2019 1:35 am

It appears that AA220 on Sunday, August 11 changed to a 777-300 from a 777-200, according to the seat map. This change happened the day before the flight, which seems very unusual for an international flight. I wonder if this is an IT issue? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Upgauging an aircraft for operational reasons isn't all that unusual. The originally scheduled 772 isn't currently scheduled to operate beyond today, so it's likely it was taken out of service for maintenance. If AA doesn't have a spare 772 at DFW (or can't easily route one through there), then the next option is to upgauge to a 77W.

This happens every day at every airline. Aircraft go out of service, they don't come out of scheduled maintenance on time, they're delayed on a previous segment. Swaps are fairly common, it just so happens this one required an upgauge.

It would be interesting to see a weekly thread of permanent equipment changes on routes (kind of like Enilria's OAG thread), just a thought.
Can someone please start a wikipedia list of failed startup airlines? I am interested in seeing just how long it would be...

It happens all the time. I've seen DFW to NRT and FRA upguage randomly to a 77W.

CLT-MUC went from an A332 to an A333 sometimes. ORD-ATH was upgauged a few times from the 788 to a 789 over the summer.

A few years ago when AA just began receiving its 787-9s, they were randomly deploying them on the DFW-PVG/PEK routes when they were still 788s... not sure why.

Also, looking at FlightRadar24 and aa.com's booking/seatmap, it's still showing a 772?

They just changed it back to the 777-200. This just seems very last minute and stupid of AA to make this change last minute and have everyones seats change.

Sometimes you sub the aircraft, and the sub has a MEL issue that came up, so you then have to sub in another aircraft. There are so many factors that go into changing equipment for a route that it's impossible to dissect this one instance without more detail. It's not last minute or stupid, it keeps the operation going.

I feel you.

This June when I was supposed to take a flight from ANC-DFW, our aircraft went from a 788 to a 789 about a day before departure. I assume people started booking the flight and upgrading to J since it had so much space. Hours before it left DFW, the aircraft reverted to the 788 and the aircraft was completely full. Had to take an ANC-PHX-DFW leg to get home.

Happens with regional aircraft to. For about a month OO had a large amount of CRJ2's in for maintenance so DL substituded 9E CRJ9's for 2 flights on SBN-ATL and 1 SBN-DTW flight.

DL has taken the A350 off the DTW-AMS flights for the last week or so, the 777LR is being used. So this is just an example of what was mentioned above.

Changes in gauge for a whole month are much different than daily changes within a carrier due to MX/WX; those are done by network planning way in advance (traditionally) as the flight numbers will be different and crew pairings will have to be adjusted. Likely it was just coincidental that OO had CR2s in MX, NP was probably testing a different angle which caused the upgrades.

Not everyone's seats will necessarily change, a good portion of coach wouldn't change as most of the coach row numbers exist on both the 772 & 77W. Also AA (and I assume most airlines) have a program that runs in the background when a widebody swap happens to ensure everyone's boarding passes are updated with the new seats. Plus if most people hadn't gotten a new boarding pass between the time the two swaps happened; they would never even know.

. . . there wouldn't be enough server space on the entire internet to publish them all ! ! !

Hey I went AMS-BOS on a 772 last week iso A333. KLM’s spare long haul frame is mostly a 772. Sometimes it’s a 773 or 789. I’ve seen a A332 being changed to a 773. As said, happens all the time.

Look at the DL widebody thread that's been maintained here for some time. Across a widebody fleet of ~150 aircraft it probably averages more than five subs a day - aircraft gone tech, positioning aircraft for new routes, seasonal upgauging... No, it's not all 'old' 767s that have mechanicals.

Yeah. I'm flying AA from DFW-XNA at the end of the month. Both flights were suppose to be on an E175. AA changed my return flight to an A319.

AA has really upped its flights to XNA. Recently announced PHL and MIA service.

It looks like on certain days from now on, there will be up to 4 daily A319 flights on DFW-XNA. It used to be all E-175s.

For some reason, I remember seeing a scheduled 737-800 flight on September 4th after the MD-80 is retired. I guess it's no longer there.
