What are the humps on top of airplanes?

Tue Oct 01, 2019 4:49 pm

I'm a bit ignorant here...what are the humps on top of some planes? I think they are for the wi-fi?

But why do only some aircraft have them and some do not? Does it vary by airline or aircraft type?

Yes, there are a few wifi providers that airlines use. Some antennae are lower profile, some are factory installed, some are not. I'm sure someone else can break this down much better than I can, but the short answer is yes.

To add to what res77W said, yes, they are often for wifi, but they also could be for satellite TV reception of airlines that offer that like JetBlue. Or probably both.

They are satellite communication antennas. Mostly they are used to provide internet connection to the passengers. The internet connection can also bu used to provide communication between flight crew and the airlines' flight operation centers.
