Asbestos in Commercial Planes

Wed Oct 02, 2019 3:20 am

Was asbestos used in the manufacturing of commercial planes at one time, because I know that it was used in many applications in the past.

Looks like it has been used, for example in aircraft breaks, insulation, etc, mostly on frames built before the 1980s. Seems like there are special maintenance routines in that case. ... mechanics/

I wouldn't be surprised if it still is used. I know that its still used in fuel tanks for military aircraft. The issue with asbestos is when it comes as a surprise where it is and like anything with an increased risk if you can manage it's manufacture, use and disposal appropriately its OK. If managing asbestos means that in many circumstances the drawbacks of managing the asbestos appropriately are not worth the added benefits then other solutions will be used.

Many fireseals were made of asbestos. There are some seals on the C-130 nacelle that look like asbestos, but the drawing has a different material specified.

To summarize, yes, but the handling of Asbestos removal is very well understood now, and in aviation, mores than most if not all other industries, it's done with incredible care in airtight warehouse clean rooms where everyone is wearing protective gear and HEPA filters are employed everywhere.
