Cockpit Color- Tan/Grey?

Fri Oct 04, 2019 12:24 pm

Why are some widebody cockpits tan? All narrowbodies I've seen, save for a few 757s have grey cockpits. Please help me figure this out!

Relaxing and neutral, no unneedded distriction. Or optimale background for screens.

Soviets used mintgreen I believe.

Hmm. Was wondering more why narrowbodies are grey vs widebodies tan.

Isn't tan/marroon a Boeing thing rather than a widebodies thing ?

As did Douglas with the DC-9 and some MD-80s (older ones I think).

As stated before, it's just some sort of neutral color that doesn't distract from the function and operation in the cockpit. Appearance can also be a factor. Manufacturers can change it between models as well. Douglas/MDD used everything from black, grey to bluish green. Lockheed used dark green in the Constellation to grey in the L-1011. Boeing used dark grey on 707, 727, early 737 and 747 classics. Tan on 757, 767, 744 and 777 then light grey on 737NG/MAX and 787. Airbus has been grey but newer models seem to be a lighter shade. Russian/formerly Soviet bloc seem to favor light blue or green. In the end it really doesn't matter.

The 747, 757, 767, and 777 all have tan cockpits. I personally like these.

Same with MD80s.

The L-1011s had a choice of three colors: Light Blue, Gray or Olive Green. Most carriers took the Light Blue option, but Air Canada chose the Olive Green. Delta eventually repainted all of the cockpits to Gray. Instrument panels were always a Gray color.

Adnan Khashoggi had previously owned a DC9 with the Douglas green cockpit. He bought a brand new 727-200 and had the flight deck redone in that same green flight deck. This was not the doing of the owner, but that the chief pilot at the time. The completion center was Air Research down in LAX. Probably around 1975.

I would assume one factor in that choice is cockpit commonality with the 767. Might as well have the offices look/feel the same for airlines operating both.

Do you have a picture of that green Tristar cockpit ?

I’ve seen the gray and blue but can’t find anything on the green version

There are not many pictures out there. We took delivery of the AC -500s and the cockpits were still full green.

The closest I can come is the cockpit of N140SC. Some of the cockpit has been painted Gray (center pedestal + side consoles) but seats are still Air Canada.

Here is a 727 with the brown treatment. I had occasion to fly this aircraft when it first came out of completion and at that time it was Boeing gray. Subsequent owner must have thought brown was better.

Boeing felt that the brown color was more relaxing but also that it hid dirt better. Guess they changed their minds on the 787.

In the end, the cockpit has to be some color and it's best to choose one that isn't too distracting, won't be eye-wateringly bright in the sun, and unlikely to be offensive, so tan/brown/beige/grey all fit the bill.

I adapted to the brown cockpits on the 757/ 67 very quickly and I like it, preferable to the grey we’ve been used to for so long

I think Boeing took a step backward by reincorporating it on the 787

I'll take grey over brown any day especially when you have brown radio panels in a grey flight deck. Looks like sh&t if you ask me. You don't see any G650 or GLEX aircraft with brown flight decks FWIW.

I think more military aircraft have black cockpits but I could’ve sworn some DC10 operators had this option

ATR-Cockpits have been available in two colors. Brown and blue:

Not sure if both options are still available, as for the current -600 models of the ATR72 and ATR42 I only find the blue-style cockpit, but with large EFIS-screens:

Airports 2019: ADB, ALG, AMD, ATL, BOG, BOS, CDG, CTS, DEL, DTW, DUS, EWR, FRA, FUK, HAM, HFT, HIJ, HND, HVG, IST, ITM, JFK, MUC, NGO, NUE, OKA, PHL, SIN, STN, TOS, YYZ, ZRH

That last one is Airbus blue-grey, which makes sense since ATR is 50% owned by Airbus.

Much of the switchgear is Airbus as well. Probably the same parts.
