How much does it cost to repaint a plane?

Fri Oct 18, 2019 3:52 pm

I know it a range based on how detailed the new paint livery but does anyone know how much it cost to repaint a 772?

I googled "How much does it cost to repaint a 777-200"

First thing it says

"A 777 paint job can cost $100,000 to $200,000, depending on the number of colors involved, and a smaller Airbus A320 can cost $50,000 or more."

The google hit is pretty close. Of course there is no limit to what you could spend, but 100-200k is a good range. A significant factor is do you want a full strip and paint or just a scuff and paint. Then there is how many coats you are taking off.

You are better taking all the old paint off. First of all how close is the paint to failing. Second, paint adds weight to the aircraft and extra coats of paint increase the operating cost of the aircraft. :old:

This brings up an interesting question. After a paint job do you have to redo the weight and balance? I know if you add components to general aviation aircraft you do, but that is a little more straight forward.

We just spent $230,000 to repaint our Global 5000 in white plus 3 color stripes and custom tail logo. Took 3+ weeks to complete.

These folks have done some work for us. I hesitate to throw out a number so you can call them for a rough quote.

They can do anything you budget will allow for. There was a time when they were doing one SWA 737 per week back when SWA was doing a paint scheme make over.

That’s sounds right for a Global.

Yea if if you own a GLEX you obviously have deep pockets so why not stick it to them. Unfortunately a common practice in the corporate world. I don't think our 757 cost anything like that, nore did the 767, and that included painting the wings Boeing gray.

Assuming your planes are privately owned and assuming anyone owning two Boeings would also have rather deep pockets, why didn’t they get stuck yo them? I suspect other factors like economies of scale for paint shops doing airliners are at play. But, yes, maintaining purpose-built bizjets is often vastly more expensive than ex-airliners precisely because of the numbers of units involved.

Don't disagree but the same guy that owend the Boeings also owned a GLX and a GV so it was pretty easy to figure how the economics compared. The fact that shop rates at some place like Gulfstream compared to say Associated could be significantly different was the issue. Actually we did most of the work in-house with our full time staff. Obviously we did not have a paint facility:) Had to laugh when we took a Twin Otter down to Kingman, AZ for paint and they were doing a 737 outside with rollers. Now that's a paint shop for the budget minded. Actually didn't look that bad from 50'.

It all depends on what you're wanting. Do you want a scuff & squirt? Where you sand the existing paint, toss some primer and then your typical white? Or are you going to take a day to mask everything, and strip it. Neutralize the stripper, wash, and optionally Alodize it? Prime and then top-coat?

Your prices will vary wildly.

You got robbed. 767 full strip and paint should be between 100-200K. Typical 747-400 will run around 150-300K

You clearly have no concept of what it costs to own and operate a large biz jet. Example: A 747-400 pilot type rating course is about 10% the cost of a Gulfstream 650 type rating course. Gotta pay to play.

And you Sir clearly have no concept that it's just primer and topcoat on metal and composite. Original cost of the AC is irrelevant. It's a simple square footage issue. Bragging about how much someone overpays for pilot training is irrelevant and doesn't even make a good red herring argument.

We recently paid $220K to strip, sand, and repaint one of our Gulfstream G-V's. That included white base, fill primer, split color scheme, and logos on the tail and winglets. The basic paint job also included painting the landing gear, polishing all bright work, repainting door frames, and recovering the stair tread material. Took about 4 weeks.

Very different markets as to size, number of suppliers, buyers of the product. The 737 BBJ is usually much cheaper to maintain than a GLF/GLEX. Higher fuel burn can offset maintenance costs. It’s not simply square footage, it’s what will the “market” bear.

How much of that is economies of scale, though? Are there startup costs for items that can be reused (e.g. masks, or programming robots) and so can be amortized over the entire fleet, whereas for a one-off you're eating the cost all at once?

Have to laugh at corporate aviation budgets. There is a well known resturant chain that operates a modest corp jet twin.
The chief pilot organized a interior refresh for this jet and accepted a kickback from the interior shop. The same Chief Pilot recommended a refurb for another pilots aircraft and when the shop finished, they called the pilot and asked where to send his check? This is all to common unfortunately. So when i see these numbers I always recall these little bonuses that make there way through the systems.

This is not some one off as I know of one pilot and a flight attendant that went to prison in the last five years for this kind of stuff, along another Fortune 500 company that has been ripped off at least twice with major aircraft purchases, and I don't think they ever found out about it.

On average how long would a paint job last on a plane flying 10-12hr. per day in all kinds of weather?
