Black section on aircraft nose?

Tue Nov 26, 2019 6:52 pm

I was browsing the database and found these:

Why do these planes have black sections on the nose? And why are they less prevalent today? The only airline I can think of that has them is Westjet.

Anti-glare paint? It was much more prevalent in the past but paint technology has improved as well as the shape of aircraft noses. That's just my two cents.

That makes sense. But why different sizes?

Because they weren't manufacturer requirements and every airline could make their own version.

Anti-glare paint, the need and the way to solve depends on the slopes of the surface as well as the window slope and glass.

Darker colors are better for glare, as well as matte is better than gloss, but like nacele paint on the 787 was only white originally, a few years later the other colors became available. Preventing scratches in the window is important, new glass has far less glare. Glass coatings like the low-e glass used in windows can also greatly improve vision in various conditions.
