What is "U" in UAV?

Sun Jan 05, 2020 9:34 am

Well, it is "Unmanned" Aerial Vehicle.
Unmanned in which sense?
Is a plane "unmanned" when there is no man present on board? Or when none of the men on board is (currently?) piloting the plane?

A UAV has no one on board, by definition. They can either be controlled remotely from a ground station or flying themselves along a pre-programmed route.

It’s “unhuman” or “uncrewed” these days in this PC world.

Can be remotely controlled, semi autonomous, or even fully autonomous.

So what would be the term applicable to plane which does have human/s on board but which is being controlled remotely (whether from a ground station or a different vehicle) or by a computer, rather than by (any of) the human/s on board? Is it included in "unmanned", or not?
