Enroute S turn

Wed Jan 15, 2020 7:49 pm

Hi everyone. I'm booked on a flight up the east coast from SRQ to EWR in the next few days, and as is my custom, I've been watching on FlightAware for delay trends, routings etc. Of late, there's been a nearly daily S turn in the flight track over southern to central Virginia. Could this be some kind of sequencing move to keep from arriving in EWR area too soon or am I just seeing and imagining things? Thanks.

Yes but they are just putting you a certain amount of mikes behind the plane in front of you. Not so you arrive at a certain time.

Can you show us an example from flightradar24?

1. obtain flight number, e.g., UA1880
2. go to flight tracker site (there are several) or simply google the flight number and the first hit will usually be a flight tracker site
3. zoom in on the map at the arrival airport

I looked at about six days and other than one day they turned a left base for Runway 4R and another couple of days a downwind for Runway 22L! No "S" turned enroute.

Looks more like a diversion around weather, but you'd have to look up the weather in that area at the time. There is a little precip off the coast of South Carolina right now that may have been in that area earlier today.

It seems a little far out to be doing an s-turn for spacing getting in to EWR.

I disagree. Washington Center frequently gives EWR/LGA inbounds delay vectors as far out as Virginia/the Carolinas for in-trail spacing. It's happened to me as a passenger several times and it's perfectly routine. Here are some examples:
