B787-9 RR engines

Thu Jan 16, 2020 1:23 am

Do the B787-9 RR engine problem still exist or is it completed fixed? Reason is I'm researching flights on NYC to Beijing and the EWR flight is operated by a B789 of Air China (RR engines) that seemingly doesn't go as far north as the flights from JFK (B748 and B77W) flying 30 minutes faster. Is this due to a degraded ETOPS rating of Air China's 787-9?

The 747-8 and 77W would fly a lot lower, you will often see A350s taking different routes to 777s as they are also flying higher.

At the higher flight levels the winds and temperature are different resulting in a different optimum flight path.

The Trent 1000 engine upgrades are still ongoing. Engines are currently still in the pipeline to get improved IPC, HPT, and IPT blade sets installed. Looking at Air fleets for Air China they have at one on time or another stored 6 of the 12 aircraft that they have. That likely occurred when they found blade issues and there were no spare engines available.

All are currently in service. They may have new upgraded sets in most of their engines by now. Without looking at their maintenance records it is pretty hard to tell if the entire fleet is done. Engines can still be in service that have not been upgraded if they pass the periodic boroscope inspections.
