NTSB - assignments

Sun Feb 02, 2020 4:42 pm

Like the rest of you I have been following the crash of Kobe Bryant's helicopter. In a high profile crash like this one does NTSB assign their most experienced investigators to the investigation? Or is whoever next available assigned to the investigation (providing they have the required technical skill).

Thanks for your responses.

I do think the initial response is the Go Team that happens to be on the current rotation, then the IIC requests technical experts from DC. Remember the field work, mostly Go Team, is a small part of the process. The labs will be researching recorders, working with the OEM on engineering details, taking interviews, looking physical. I was at a NTSB metallurgy briefing, pretty fascinating stuff on how metals break, if you will.

Isn't this just another run of the mill GA accident?

( increased interest comes up when the impression is
that "real genius" created another incident/crash scenario
or indications go for some new hardware deficiency.)

In theory, yes and the FAA has been delegated investigatory responsibility’s for GA accidents. But, the NTSB can always do investigations where the “public interstate “ aspect becomes overriding. Joe Public crashes his plane with 5 dead, the local FSDO will investigate. Kobe Bryant dies in a crash, the Go Team is sent.
