Security Questions

Tue Feb 04, 2020 2:09 pm

Apologies if this is in the wrong area of the site.

I'm interested in views on the level of security for flights recently. On my last two flights I have experienced what I think are major lapses on security, but others may view these as minor.

The first was when travelling with my wife to Madeira from Gatwick. On passing through a passport check at Gatwick, my wife inadvertently had my passport, and vice versa. She was not stopped when showing my passport (we were at different parts of the queue), but I was stopped when I showed hers.

The second was yesterday when flying from Tenerife South to Gatwick. I was passed through security without question, but when I sat down on the plane and opened my bag I found that I had accidentally left a 500ml bottle of water inside. It had not been picked up by security checks, including bag scanning.

Are these experiences unusual?

These are not unusual. Most security at airports is for the theater of it. It makes people FEEL safer and employs thousands of people in make-work programs.

I've personally flown internationally with pepper spray in my carry on on more than one occasion. My father once flew with a loaded starter pistol he had forgotten in his carry on.

100% security is a myth, and that applies to everything. Homes, businesses, jails, airports, whatever. Current security measures at airports are part theater, for sure, but they're better than what we had before. That doesn't mean things won't slip through; it just means less slips through than before these measures were instituted.

Yes, both of those things mentioned were security lapses. And yes, I'm sure things like that happen all the time. There's not much that can be done to fix that that isn't already being done.

Even the thoughts behind it are just theater. You could create a lot more casualties with a well placed explosion in the terminal than on an aircraft itself.
