Airbus A330(-300) fuel burn improvements 1994 to 2015?

Mon Feb 10, 2020 7:33 am

Hi everyone.

We often speak about how the A330 (especially the -300) has improved over its life and most of that discussion involves payload and range.

My question today is, how has fuel burn improved over time? What is the fuel burn difference between a circa 1995 model A333 and the latest version of the A333 (the 242t version which was first delivered in 2015)?

I think it would be interesting to have a combined view of payload/range AND fuel burn of this great aircraft.

Airbus quoted a net 12% fuel/trip improvement for the -900 (11% T7000, 4% aero less 3% extra weight and engine installation drag) vs the late model -300, at equal seat count, another 2% improvement from a 10 seat gain from cabin layout changes. Prior to this the -300 likely gained 1-3% efficiency due to small incremental engine sfc improvements and minor weight savings/drag clean up. As noted, what was more spectacular over the years was the ability to increase MTOW/Range with only modest creep in OEW.

The EP upgrades for the Trent 700 were partly refitable. They increased the fuel burn also for older engines.

Aerodynamic refinements gave about 1% less fuel burn.

This edition of the FAST magazines gives an overview to the evolution steps of the A330.

It is aldso interesting to look at all the additions to the FBW.

Some really great information so far everyone. Thanks for this. Keep it coming haha

I haven't had a chance to read through everything yet but I'm looking forward to doing that when I have a moment.

I would think it would be more accurate to say “ They decreased the fuel burn also for older engines” ;)

I assumed for 6 hour flights with cargo demand the A330-300 is a good enough aircraft with cheap capital cost. I expected for more demanding missions the B787 would be the obvious choice.

From the link:

It's only in 2017 that the A330-200 became rather irrelevant in new deliveries.
