Durability of high-pressure turbine blades

Thu Feb 20, 2020 7:56 pm

Does anyone on this form know how long high-pressure turbine blades in widebody engines usually last? On the web, I found anything from 2,500 to 20,000 cycles, which does not make much sense to me. Are HPT blades usually fully swapped out after the first shop visit, i.e. every 4-6 years?

Depends upon a whole range of factors : type of engine, severity of operation, environment of use, etc. I've known HPT Blades that look sh***y and needing replacing after 800 cycles, I've known some that are OK for refitment after 6,000 cycles. There is no "typical". However, typically ( :D ) the whole set will be replaced at the same time to minimise the risk of an earlier-than-expected blade rejection due to one rogue refitted blade. However, I cannot speak for the practises of all overhaul bases / engine types.

Engines are only pulled after degraded performance or maintenance findings. The record is around 12 years on a 737NG.

We finally had our original LM2500 engine changed out after being installed for 19 years (1982 to 2001) GE wanted their engine back to study it.
