Forth Programming in Avionics

Wed Mar 11, 2020 3:12 pm

Hi,

I'm a terminal nerd and I need to know... things. I've learned Python quite well, I self-taught R (for a scientific project years ago), I like C++, and now I'm dabbling a bit in Forth.

Forth should have perished 65 million years ago by suffering an extraterrestrial rock to its head.

But it is still a current programming language when it comes to embedded systems. Real-time control in embedded systems with CPUs that were modern in 1988? Fine, you can do that. There are CPUs on which Forth, a relatively high-level language, runs natively. And you can program a ton of abstraction layers until it becomes slow.

But there are also the obvious drawbacks, like every Forth specialist programming his own stuff that can't be used in any other projects.

Do you know of Forth in aircraft systems?

The 777 has it in some avionics.

In my day most millitary firmware was in Ada and Airbus continued its use in civilian project.
