Never saw this before, taxied to gate last night and the WN 737 next to us at MCO had a tail stand supporting it. Is this normal??

Yes,very normal. I know DL uses a tail stand on the -800 also and likely the -900. As the cabin empties the rear cargo holds still have almost full loads. It gets a little tail heavy with the nose strut usually fully extended without the tail stand.

The 900 is worse for this than the 800, but I'd imagine the light loads aren't helping their W&B, so they are being extra cautious. The aft CG of the airplane actually benefits it.

If you are referring to SWA, use of the tail stand is not optional based on loads. Its use is mandatory on all through stops on the -800.

We us tailstands on all 900's at UA. Only for download. For loading it is not required as after fueling the CG shifts far enough forward there is no tipping danger.

Here's what happens if its not used and the aircraft isn't loaded correctly.

It's also used on the 747F because of the aft main cargo door.

Not exactly new. Anyone ever see a 727 parked without the tail-stairs down? You could only do that if there was enough "ballast fuel" in the tank. IINM, strectch DC8s needed a tail stand, too.
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?
