What is that on this 737’s landing gear?

Sun Mar 22, 2020 10:18 pm

I saw this photo in the recent uploads list, and noticed that it appears to have some kind of attachment on the nose gear. Is it some kind of gravel runway mod or something?

I was raised by a cup of coffee.

Gravel deflector for operations on unimproved runways. Alaska has used this in the past along with other back country operators. When the NG retracts it fits close to the fuselage.

Note also the little blower thingies on the bottom front of the engine nacelles, to deflect FOD from the engines.

I used to work on 737-200 long time ago and we had few planes with gravel deflector. We used longer jack to raise the strut higher to remove the wheels.

If I remember correctly the vortex dissipators were removed from the engines later on (at least for the airline I was working for) because of blades erosion.

If my memory is good the tyre screens were also removed later on.
