Campinas question

Tue May 26, 2020 3:25 pm

Does runway 15 at Campinas (VCP/SBKP) present any particularities that make landing there challenging? Undulating terrain, unpredictable wind, runway upslope, etc.

Appreciate any input from Campinas regulars.

Howdy. A Campinas native here.

Normally if you're landing on RWY15, winds are predictable and no storms are (or should be) in the area. If winds blow from the NW for RWY33, there is a chance of storms or weather changes throghout the day.

Both runways have a 30-40 meter (120-150) embankment on its threshold but that should be it. No significant terrain in the vicinity (20-30 NM) of the airport. RW15 has an up-slope of 0.3% though not constant (at bit less until mid point and then a higher degree from mid point to the end).

Air traffic is not that big of a deal since São Paulo is 50NM away and you shouldn't have any holding time to land there...

Hope this helps.

Thanks, 744lover. Appreciate the quick reply. Sounds very straightforward indeed.

So you don't find the embankment causes any weird or wacky wind effects? Any RADALT misbehavior because of the terrain on short final?

Not really on the wind issues.

On RADALT you should be careful and keep your eyes on the runway: while on the GS, you'll hear 200, and a split of a second later 100 (due to the embankment). It surprised me first time I flew to it but, as I said, as long as you keep your eyes on the runway and don't "blindly fly" the ILS you'll be fine
