Shuttle plane

Tue May 26, 2020 5:10 pm

I was remembering Driving to Germany from the UK 7 years ago and taking a Euro tunnel shuttle train to France which carries your car. I was recently thinking if the same could be done for planes to carry holidaymaker's cars on intercontinental flights. Cargo aircraft today such as a C-130 Hercules already carry cars and tanks. Why can't it be civilian.

Imagine this:

Cost...

A330-200 costs approx $9000 USD per hour and can hold say 16 cars (23 pallets...pallet is 300cm, the average car is 440cm). You want to fly your car from London - Malaga (2.5 hours) and back...so that's about $2800 per car, per return flight. I'm guessing you can get cheaper car rentals in Malaga....

The only place in the US where an auto train has worked is from the Northeast/ DC area to Florida and back. And that is almost exclusively for long term stays in Florida.

Heck, we drove from San Diego to Dallas (1,375 miles / 2,212 km) and back a couple years ago because the wife needed to see her personal doctors, and we were worried about transportation for an indeterminate stay in the Dallas area. Ended up being for 9 weeks. (Just in incase you did not now how big Texas is while driving, when we reached the Texas border near El Paso from San Diego, it was still a bit less than halfway to Dallas.)
Not all who wander are lost.

I flew the Carvair (Interocean), during a 9 month stint in Congo, circa 1963. Actually a pretty nice aircraft for its time. Sort of a 747 with props.

Wow, Bravo... What I wouldn't give to buy you some beers and just ask about your career! Have you ever considered writing a book? I guarantee you you'd sell several hundred copies within days on this forum alone! ...I know a couple agents if that would entice you :)

I'm guessing then you've also flown the DC-4? If so, how did its flight characteristics compare to the Carvair?
"..your eyes will be forever turned skyward, for there.." yeah we know the DaVinci quote. Unfortunately, we're grounded :(

You could buy a cheap used car for that price ...

Cars really only get transported on aircraft for special events, like Formula 1 races, POTUS travel or certain high-value (usually highly customized) vehicles. $5000 transport cost for a run-of-the-mill Toyota isn't worth it, but it gets insignificant when you're urgently awaiting your $250,000 armored luxury limousine or your $500,000 sports car.

Yes we had about six DC4's as well. Suppported the UN mission from 61 through 65. Interocean was a LUX based airline that also went under the name of Intercontinental.

I really don't remember much about flying the Carvair other than it was way up there when we taxied. I was very wet behind the ears, and 20 years old so most of the Captains were not in a big rush to turn the controls over to me, if you get my drift. Very different times for sure.

A few years ago, I had chance to fly 28 supercars (Bugattis, McLarens, RRs, Bentlys, etc.) from NY to Prestwick for the Gumball 3000 rally. It was really cool to go down the main deck on the 747 during cruise to check out all of those amazing machines. We had a sister ship launch after us with 26 additional cars. I'm on a trip now, but I'll try to find and upload the pics I took when I get home.

Wasn’t the Carvair developed by Freddy Laker? I was able to get a tour of a Carvair at KSFO back in the 90s. Do I remember it correctly that we climbed a ladder to get up to the flight deck? Cool plane.
