COVID-19 measures in the cockpit

Thu May 28, 2020 5:03 pm

We hear a lot about measures applying to passengers due to COVID-19. Are there particular measures or changes imposed on pilots as well?
Like some airlines having them to wear masks for the duration of the flight, take a test when coming back from a certain country/region, or forbidding them to leave their home/hotel room during rest time, etc.

My apologies if this topic has already been discussed before.

I find the topic really interesting. Crew are definitely required PPE. More and more airlines are also providing some health kits to keep hand hygiene. I really hope for a safety restarting of aviation. :)

We have to wear masks at all times except when seated in the cockpit. We are not permitted to wear them while operating because apart from this needing to be certified, it would cause issues with oxygen masks.

Other arrangements include not being allowed to leave the hotel room on layovers. Either way, layovers have been cut way back and most flights are now turnarounds when feasible.

I pretty much wipe the flight down with wipes I travel with when I enter into a new aircraft before I start reviewing the logbook and starting my acceptance checks. We are required to wear masks except in the flight deck. I bring my own food on the road. When I get to my hotel, I wipe the room down before I get settled in.

Staying at home when you are sick comes to mind.
