Cabin Crew yearly flight limit

Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:05 am

Sorry if this has been covered here before.
Is it correct cabin crew are capped at 900 flying hours per year? And can they go over that limit in a single year or carry over any unused hours from the previous year?

Does this mean that on a average salary 'long haul' CC for example work on average 20 hours or less per week ie, potentially just one LH trip a week?

And if one is on 50% flying, does that mean they potentially just work twice a month or if they were lucky to get a LON - SYD trip then once a month?

Can crew on contracted reduced flying hours, carry out all their required flying within a few weeks back to back, and then effectively have a couple of months off flying?

I think you should clarify that this is a European regulation. The FAA in the United States, for example, does not cap flight attendant hours to 900 in a rolling 12 month period.

If you are on a 50% contract, it is possible that you are only flying two long haul trips a month. The scheduling also depends on the specific airline and their cabin crew contract.

If you are full time, again, it varies by the airline and the type of flying you are doing. I am full time and sometimes I am only scheduled two trips in a month. For example, in January and February when the flying schedule is reduced, I am generally rostered fewer trips with longer layovers.

In EU the limit for pilots (and cabin crew - CC - alike) the limits (amongst a few others are as follows:

100 in the last 28 days,
900 per calendar year* (Jan 1st through Dec 31st) << OR >>
1000 in the last rolling year (ie today is June 13th,2020, therefore no more than 1000 since June 14th, 2019)

*the additional limit is 2000 hrs of duty in the event that crew member performs additional ground duties (trainings such as CRM, REC, Office Duty, etc.)

You are right for the EU, you can't fly more than 1000 hours in 12 months.
And that would be, on average 20 hours a week (slightly more since there are weeks off) which might be 2 sectors.

But, this is flying time, not working time. Before and after (or between) the flights, there is still works to do which isn't counted in the 1.000.
Also to take into consideration, a flight (from A to B and back to A), takes at least 3 days. For example start noon day 1 at A, arrive in the night at B, go to the hotel and start the flight back in the afternoon on day 2, arriving in the morning at A on day 3.
Depending on the trip, you have day 4 and 5 off and maybe 6 and/or 7 top. That's a week gone already.

So with check in 1.5 hours before the flight x2, the 'average' working week of LH CC is 23 hours over 3 days?

Many crews are not accommodated close to the airport - it's not unheard of to have an hour-long ride in the van each way. So I would factor in that travel time as well.
