Republic MD-82 initial routes?

Tue Jun 16, 2020 3:09 am

When MD-82s entered service with Republic Airlines in 1981, what were some of the first routes they were assigned to?

MSP-LAX/PHX/SFO, maybe a MSP-MKE turn.

DEN was early too. I first photographed them at DEN in Sept 1981.

Tango-Bravo I do not have information concerning Republic’s initial routes for the MD-82, but just a short story here . . .

In June 1982 I flew RC from Minneapolis to Dallas-Fort Worth (with a stop in Kansas City-MCI) aboard MD-82 N301RC (and return a week later; same aircraft).

When I booked the trip several months earlier the flights were scheduled with DC9-50 equipment but were upgraded to the MD-82 following the bankruptcy of Braniff (May 1982) to provide additional capacity.

I did not know about the change of aircraft until arriving at the gate in MSP and seeing the MD-82 aircraft

Interesting story to which I can relate in two ways. On a PHX-MSP flight in 1994 I was on N301RC albeit by then in Northwest livery of the '80s. About one month earlier on a NW DFW-MSP flight I took, the equipment type was downgraded to a DC-9-50 in place of the MD-80 shown NW's then-current direct flights timetable.

Getting back to RC routes operated by MD-82s c.1981-82, if memory is correct, I recall a photo of a RC MD-82 in an airline/aviation magazine whose caption stated that the type was first used on a multi-stop routing MSP-FAR-BIS-MOT or similar, likely chosen as a pilot familiarization rotation. In spite of an extensive internet search, I have not been able to locate the photo/news brief.

With Republic being one of the first US domestic MD-80 operators with their early order (PSA and Hawaiian being the other two), one could argue the relatively long/thin 4 hr mid-con operation (Ala MSP-LAX/SFO) were ahead of their time in 1982.
Did you know that a Boeing 717-200 is really a McDonnell Douglas MD95-30? ;-)
