Gate assignments

Thu Jun 18, 2020 12:44 pm

Aside from the obvious aircraft size limitations and the requirement of international arrivals to be able to funnel passengers through customs, what thoughts go into the assignment of gates to run of the mill arriving and departing flights from a major connecting hub such as Atlanta or Chicago O'Hare?

Usually whatever gate is open and available that the aircraft can fit into.

My airline has a program in our major hubs that you drop all the flights into and it spits out the most efficient way to park everything. Factors in aircraft type, departure/arrival times, and even the time it takes to push so other outbound flights aren’t blocked.

Since the departure times every day are relatively static it doesn’t change very often except for the day of week flights or upsizes/downsizes. Things obviously change as aircraft go mechanical or there are delays for whatever reason, but there is a method to the madness.

The process itself is fairly simple, it just gets complicated in major hubs. When I’m working on a flight schedule for my area of responsibility I literally draw our parking positions on a white board and gantt it out.
Look at sweatpants guy. This is a 90 million dollar aircraft, not a Tallahassee strip club
