A321Neo Exit Configurations

Topic is relatively straight forward: how many different exit configurations exist for the A321Neo?

I understand there is the A321 standard with 4 doors on each side (non cabin-flew 1), a cabin flex variant with 3 doors on each side with a pair of overwing exits (2, although it appears an additional pair of overwing exits are plugged), a variant with 3 doors on each side and 4 overwing exits (3), a fourth variant with exit doors at each end of the plane with four overwing window exits and plugged 3L/3R (4), and then a final variant with both doors 3L/3R and the second overwing window exits plugged (5).

I understand the purpose of the cabin flex is to maximize seating capacity, but I don't understand why an airline, such as AA, would chose the cabin flex variant over the standard A321 configuration when they don't appear to be using the plane to its full capacity.

This has come up before; I believe the options with 2 doors forward of the wing are not available on the NEO.

Yes I get that. I guess my question is why there are so many specific exit configs. I don’t recall any other modern commercial airliner having that many outside the 763.

If you are an LCC and packing the punters in , you need all those door, if you have a premium heavy configuration on your LR/XLR version you dont need as many doors

There are really only two configurations. Numbers 2, 4, and 5 from your list are variations on configuration 3. Each one is used based on seat count. Activating all 6 doors and 4 overwing exits is only needed by ULCCs. Everyone else is going to deactivate as many exits as is possible based on their desired seat count. Each configuration has a different maximum passenger count assigned to it by the FAA and EASA. The type certificate data sheet will give the exact figures.
UPDATE: I see someone posted the EASA documents while I was writing this.

It's available on the NEO. I think it's a matter of density as well, the first A21Ns for PAL have the 4-door option in a 12/156 config, while the last two deliveries (and all succeeding ones) with the overwing exits are in a 12/183 config.

It's available on the NEO. I think it's a matter of density as well, the first A21Ns for PAL have the 4-door option in a 12/156 config, while the last two deliveries (and all succeeding ones) with the overwing exits are in a 12/183 config.



Going forward it will not be available. Early A321neos had this configuration while the NX config was getting certified. In the future all A321neos will be built to the NX standard and the former configuration will no longer be an option.

The ACF is lighter and offers more flexibility regarding cabin layout, American currently has four different cabin versions of the A321:

A321CEO (no sharklets) = C16Y171
A321CEO (with sharklets) = F10C20W36Y36
A321CEO (with sharklets) = C16W33Y132
A321NEO = C20Y176

We can even compare to the cabin layout of the B757 that left the fleet in March:

C12Y164
C24W52Y108
C16W52Y108

I don't expect to see any company paying Airbus to have a A321NEO with the same door layout that the CEO has.

Yes, by removing doors L2/R2 the gain taking into account American layout equals to those extra seats.

Could we see Airbus or a separate company later on offer a program to plug the 2LR door and have the option to add another OWWE (like on the 319) on current 321CEOs and early NEOs to match the cabin flex option?

Technically its not impossible but the associated costs for certification will be high and therefor unlikely.
