Differences between DHC-8-400 and Dash 8 Q400

Tue Sep 01, 2020 10:41 pm

Hi All!

What are the differences between the DeHavilland DHC-8-400 compared to the newer Bombardier Dash 8 Q400? Same airframe I know but any major differences? Do these differences apply to the smaller Q200 and Q300?

Thank you!

I believe that Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 was the initial plane and DeHavilland DHC-8-400 was a result of restructuring, when Bombardier sold its C300 program to Airbus, it eventually divested its turboprop program as well.

On Wikipedia (not always 100%) it states that the program was launched as 8-400 in 1999 and in 2000 it was renamed to 8-Q400 as the program started to utilize "Q" benefits (mainly noise and vibration reduction). I honestly believed that it was always Q400, since the launch and should not have significant differences (mostly PIPs and enhancements). There was Next Generation Q400 that presented several updates, and better performance (lower fuel consumption). I think that this "NG" is what is now known as DHC-8-400.

As always, I stand to be corrected.

DeHavilland Canada madenthe Dash 8 first (hence the DHC-8). Then when DHC went Kaput Bombardier stepped into the program and did the rest, and changed DHC-8 to Dash 8 we know today.

It is just a marketing name. The aircraft are the exact same. Bombardier marketed the Dash-8 family as quiet aircraft with the introduction of the active noise vibration dampening system, with the Q standing for Quiet.

DHC-8 has always been the official manufacturer designation of the aircraft, from the original -100 through the Q-series 400s. It's what's printed on the aircraft certificate, etc.

"Dash-8" is just the colloquial/marketing name for the aircraft.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.
