Lufthansa Technik // Manilla

What's so special about LH Technik Manilla ?

I mean, why did BA recently send their A380s to LH Technik Manilla for service, when there's a LH Technik much closer in Hamburg ??

Is there some logistical or technical superiority to the Manilla facility ? Or was it a simple matter of scheduling ??

Labour in Manila is by the factor 2 to 3 cheaper than Hamburg. And especially labour intensive work like aircraft overhaul (easily five digits manhours per large check) is not competitively done in high labour cost countries.

And before somebody says otherwise: no, quality isn’t worse outside of anecdotes.

Flying an A380 half way across the world costs peanuts if you can save half the cost in the actual maintenance. Even including ferrying the crew back and so on.

Similarly, many airlines do some overnight and longer checks at outports if it is cheaper than home base. If your plane is staying overnight (or overday) in Hong Kong, Manila or Xiamen anyway, might as well do the checks there if it is cheaper.

LHT Hamburg doesnt do heavy maintenance for airline customers anymore since a while. They are specialized in components overhaul, engines and outfitting/overhaul for VIP customers only.

Even AF/KL sent some of their A330s and 747s to Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) in CGK for maintenance, despite the long distance and already having massive facilities of their own. I've seen pics of other far-away airlines having their maintenance at GMF as well on Instagram, but I can't remember all of them. Nepal Airlines, Oman Air, and Cebu sent their A330. East Star, and Jeju Air sent their 738, while Indigo sent their A320.

Other than lower labour cost, long backlog at their own facilities might be the reason why they decided to sent their planes somewhere else for maintenance. Right?

In AF/KL case, that might very well be true but I am not too familiar with their maintenance planning. In LHs case, Manila (as well as Malta and Budapest) are to be considered "Home" facilities. No large checks anymore in Hamburg or other places in Germany apart from strict exceptions or special cases due to the exorbitatant labour cost difference.

Most of the AF/KL labour intensive maintenance ( incl. all 747 D and C checks) are years ago transferred (HAECO, GMF, etc) because of the difference in labour costs.
If the in-house dedicated HMV line has been closed, no in house D/C checks are possible anymore.
However, an AF/KL maintenance quality insurance team is on site at CGK and depending tasks performed one (or more) acceptance flights are performed.
