Tracking BA259 flight today on the 21st, it's taking a really odd flight path down into Egypt, which it never does. Anyone can explain please? Thanks

Not sure if this is the reason but looking at the history it seems to be avoiding Iranian airspace, usually taking a northerly routing over Russia and Kazakhstan. Perhaps with the winds today it worked out more economical today taking the southerly routing with no Russian overflight fees.

Last time this question was asked the answer appeared to be airspace limitations in Afghan airspace, coupled with not overflying Iranian airspace, which means that they have to stay further south (very far south, to avoid Syria) if they can’t get clearance through Kabul FIR.

That's pretty far south, plus they can't fly into Israeli airspace either.

Looks not that unusual IF you must avoid Iran and Afghanistan. Used to be able to go thru Damascus to Amman thence to the Gulf, or over Iraq, but that’s cutoff

Kabul FIR doesn't have adequate radar coverage, hence the issues transiting Afghanistan (greater separation is required between aircraft, limiting capacity). This being said, the crunch point is for westbound flights at night time only, so for this particular flight, Afghanistan isn't to blame.
It's probably to avoid Russian airspace (due to expensive overflight fees) and Iranian/Syrian/Israeli/Iraqi airspace.

This flight seem to have left London on time, but had to put more flight time so it seems to cause a more then 1 hour delay into Lahore.

BA258 taking that same long path back, this is odd as BA260/261 flies right through Afghanistan, like BA258 does any other day.

I feel like we had a very similar thread not too long ago, for flights EU to the Subcontinent. Can't seem to find it though.

I've noticed that most of BA flights out of India will take the southern route, you can track now BA36 as it crosses Egyptian airspace.

There have been issues arranging Russian overflight permits. Lots of adhoc flights.
Also when I was on shift last week, there were big issues building routes out of Lahore that complied with Pakistani airspace rules.
