Kabul FIR doesn't have adequate radar coverage, hence the issues transiting Afghanistan (greater separation is required between aircraft, limiting capacity). This being said, the crunch point is for westbound flights at night time only, so for this particular flight, Afghanistan isn't to blame.
It's probably to avoid Russian airspace (due to expensive overflight fees) and Iranian/Syrian/Israeli/Iraqi airspace.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!
