Multi-Year Recovery

Fri Oct 23, 2020 10:40 pm

How will the recovery look like for major carriers(Amercian,Delta, United) when travel demand picks up again? Will they acquire planes and slots or would they still be in sort of a hibernation mode with lower ticket prices?

The FAA regulations are going to be a major roadblock for scaling down and scaling back up.

Seniority is rule one.
So when the high bid captains and first officers on wide bodies use their seniority to move down the food chain to a different type to hold a job then they will have to be retrained on a new type because you can only be current on one type at a time.
Then in order to be current on type then you need 3 take-offs and landings in the last 90 days.
Instrument Landings as well in the last 6 months.

It is going to be musical chairs retraining a lot a pilots for type and currency in the sim as things wind down and the same as things wind back up.

My thought is it will be a one year wind down and about the same to wind back up because of that 777/787 first officer is going to be bumping somebody in a narrow-body going down and people shifting between Airbus, Boeing and McD to hold whatever job their seniority will allow.

That is of course if things wind back up quickly.

Not going to be simple except for WN as they only have a fleet that is considered "one type"
