I noticed in the picture below that Caspian Airlines has at least one MD-80 with a HUD installed (unclear if it's operational). This airframe is ex-Alitalia. I am curious how widespread HUD use is/was on the Mad Dogs. I know at Delta, HUDs were never used on the MD88 and MD90.

I heard PSA had them on their MD-80s. Some frames weren't taken up and went to CAAC in PSA config according to the caption on this image:
These two airplane were suppose to be delivered to PSA, but never taken by that carrier. Douglas was therefore able to sell them to China at a very attractive price. These two planes had all the PSA cockpit equipment including HUD plus the addition of dual Omega nav system and HF radio for long range operations

Another interesting tidbit about PSA's MD-80s is that they were all equipped with HUDs. They were classified for Cat IIIB landings, although USAir removed the hardware. The -80s were all classified for Cat IIIA Autopilot landings, though.

My flight instructor just happens to be an ex-USAir MD-80 driver (former PSA as well). He confirms the above that PSA did have HUDs on their MD-80s: "PSA 80s did have a crude HUD. Basically a meatball in crosshairs. Didn't work at SEA." Pretty cool for a late 70s design. Surely in the ex-Alitalia example above the system is non-operation due to sanctions (but remains installed so as to not affect w&b). Any pics out there of mad dog cockpits with the HUD other than the ones in the DB?

Hmmm... so like a rudimentary flight director with none to minimal speed/alt info? Curious as to why it didn't work at SEA as well...

Swissair used the HUD.

Thanks for that. It seems that there was an option for Capt + F/O HUDs! I wonder if any operator ever selected that option from McD?
