APU Fire test on Boeing 777

Thu Mar 25, 2021 6:10 pm

Bonjour à tous.
Je vais poser ma question en Français et me servir de Google pour la traduire en Anglais.

Good morning all. I will ask my question in French and use Google to translate it into English.

I am an aviation retiree having worked on DC8, 737 (all models), DC10, 767. I bought the 777 simulator for P3Dv5 from PMDG. Which is absolutely fabulous among other things.
But there is something that I find strange. On all the planes that I have known, in Cold and Dark panel, without GPU before starting the APU with BAT on ON, we do an APU Fire test But, on this PMDG 777, the APU Fire test does not work with the battery bus powered, you need a GPU ??
My question, could someone confirm me, or tell me if this is correct. "Not possible to do an APU fire test without a GPU" ??

Thank you in advance to the one or those who will give me this information.

You need to turn on the standby power switch (located left upper side of the overhead panel) to main battery. This turns on the cockpit avionics and allows you to do the fire test.

At least, that's how it works in real life.

:champagne: Ok great, thanks for the answer, it works, I had not found anything in the PMDG documentation. Thanks again, and best regards

The Aircraft Maintenance Manual has following procedure for APU starting and operation:

APU starting and Operation

This task gives the steps to operate the APU engine in the usual conditions. Use this procedure to do a check of the APU operation and other related systems when APU operation is necessary.

[...]

- Set the switches:

    - Set the BATTERY switch on the P5 overhead panel to the ON position.

    - Make sure the APU GEN switch on the P5 panel is in the ON position.

[...]

- If electrical power is available, do the test for the fire detection system:

    - Push and hold the FIRE/OVHT TEST switch on the P5 panel.

[...]

- Move the APU selector on the P5 overhead panel to the ON position.

[...]

- Move the APU selector switch on the P5 panel to the START position, hold the switch at the START position for one second and manually move the switch to the ON position.

[...]

- If you did not do the test for the fire detection system, do these steps:

CAUTION: DO NOT HOLD THE FIRE/OVHT SWITCH FOR MORE THAN 30 SECONDS. IF YOU HOLD THE FIRE/OVHT SWITCH FOR MORE THAN 30 SECONDS, THE APU WILL DO AN EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN.

    - Push and hold the FIRE/OVHT TEST switch on the P5 panel.
  These lights will come on:

        - APU fire handle on the P5 panel

        - MASTER WARNING light on the glare shield panel, P7.

    - The TEST IN PROGRESS message will show on EICAS.

    - The fire alarm in the control cabin will come on.

    - The fire alarm on the service panel and APU remote shutdown, P40, will come on.

    - After 5 seconds, the TEST PASSED message will show on EICAS.

    - Release the FIRE/OVHT TEST switch.

    - The fire alarms will go off.

    - These lights will go off:

        - The fire handle on the P5 panel

        - Master Warning on the P7 panel

Boeing doesn't seem to care much about the fire/overheat test before the APU start when electrical power is not available. Not a single word about the standby power switch. Just do the test after the APU start.
