CRJ-700 “hole” in wing

Fri Apr 02, 2021 3:23 am

I have been meaning to ask about this for about 10 years now and finally remembered. Anyone who has worked a CRJ-700 should know about a “hole” on the bottom side of each wing, just aft of the slats about 10 feet or so from the wing root. It is rectangular and about 4inches wide and 8 inches tall or so. Does anyone know the purpose of this?

I have searched google and the forums here and found nothing. I also don’t have a photo handy.

It was a cover plate on the flaps. If I remember correctly they found the bracket was breaking and causing flap problems. The drag penalty was so small they just removed the plate and never fixed the bracket.

Interesting. Thanks. Looking at it is so weird, and seems like it would be a pretty bad location for a missing panel. But clearly their engineers know better!

Thanks for the info.

The bottom of the wing is way less sensitive to flow disturbance compared to the top.

True. And I don’t doubt that, but this area in specific is fairly forward facing, so I imagined a larger impact. But again that is well outside my sphere of knowledge.
