727-100 Range

Sun May 16, 2021 1:17 pm

I knew the 727-100 had great range and much longer than the 727-200 since it has a much shorter fuselage, but I was surprised Eastern flew it nonstop ATL-LAX and in both directions (westbound taking longer with headwinds, especially in the winter). What was the maximum range and what was it's longest passenger route? Did ATL-LAX have any weight restrictions?

727 = 727-100
72S = 727-200 aka 727 Stretch

TJSJ-KPIT was a long -200 leg as was KMCI-KSEA esp if the weather was down and winter winds. Yes -100s could go farther, but high gross weight -200s like Sterling in Denmark were champs. I think they did CPH-LPA in an all-tourist configuration which was over 2,100 nautical.

Late 80's PI flew CLT-SEA non-stop in their -200's.

I believe the -200ADV had a significantly higher fuel capacity (`25%) which compensated for the extra structural weight and payload.

Piedmont flew CLT-LAX and CLT-SFO with the 727-200 when they launched both in 1984. CLT-SEA was flown with the 733 when launched in 1987.

That's very interesting as the source for my post was a dear friend who flew for PI and told me of the long take-off rolls from CLT-SEA, he never flew the B733 for PI as I recall. Hmmm

CLT-SFO is actually 20 miles further than CLT-SEA as SFO is slightly further west.

Unfortunately the closest schedule I can find online is four months after Piedmont merged into USAir and it shows CLT-SEA on the 733.

As much as I love the 727 I wouldn’t say it had ‘great range’ the highest gross weight versions were at their limit westbound transcon

It was really more suited as a short to medium range aircraft which is how most airlines used them

I meant the 727-100 relative to other similiar 1960s era aircraft types such as the 727-200, 737, and DC9.

It is tough to compare ranges of 727s because of the optional aux tanks. Some were installed in the aft cargo compartment, forward cargo compartment or both. Here are two planes with both aux tanks installed:

Its largely dependent on payload carried.

MGM Grand for example ran 727-100 between LAX and JFK, but only had 30 odd passengers.

PI had AUX fuel tanks on the small subset of 72S frames meant for the then-new West Coast service.

This video has been shared several times on this site, but always a timeless video to share. USAir 727-200LR CLT-SFO inflight video on Youtube from 1989. 50-second take-off roll! Imagine if it had the retrofitted winglets.

Understood, our -100’s were really ancient by the time I flew them, quite creaky and most of them wouldn’t fly in a straight line !

We had a few with the more powerful -9 engines as used on our standard -200 models, they performed a little better but the range wasn’t much better as our 100’s carried less total fuel than our -200’s

Very interesting pictures

It looks like those aux tanks were plumbed into the same manifold as the center tank ?

Guessing you would burn these aux tanks first before starting the usual schedule of burning down the center tank to equal the wing tanks then tank to engine on all three

CLT-SFO in my experience originated in GSO with light fuel load, then stopped in CLT and topped off. The takeoff roll at CLT was indeed very long.

Northeast flew the 727-100 LAX-MIA for a time. It was an oddball route. Supposedly the westbound flight sometimes had to stop in IAH for fuel.

I did ride on an EA 727-25C from LAX to ATL once. It was substituted for a L-1011! The weights of this variant were higher than the early-25. They did not have aux fuel tanks.
