UA 752/3 and 763 CRT displays

Thu May 20, 2021 12:14 am

747 FE’s interesting thread on the MD11’s CRT displays has me wondering about the CRT’s on UA’s 757 and 763 Fleet

The 764 has LCD’s so support for those components is not an issue but unlike other operators who’ve upgraded these displays with several different options I’ve not read of any plans involving UA to do so and it appears they plan to operate these aircraft for quite a while longer

CRT’s must be getting more and more difficult to replace and / or repair, curious to know how they will deal with this ?

The TFD-7000 LCD is plug-and-play for the 757 and 767 Flight Deck:

I’m sure it is but that doesn’t answer my question !

Sorry, I misread your post as you were specifically asking what UA's plans were for CRT replacement. At least there are drop-in LCD options available, which is good.

Since a bunch of 752s and 763s went to the desert from AA and it’s highly likely the PW752s aren’t returning there’s some CRTs right there.

Seeing more and more CRTs being replaced by LCDs, I noticed that in a few of our 74s at my shop as well.

Following video states that CRTs will no longer be in production after 31-DEC-21. So, retrofit is a way to go, I presume.

I found this interesting video:

They are repaired by specialists in a shop, the original CRTs on our 747s are still in use. If one breaks there are enough spares from airlines who upgraded or scrapped frames.

Interesting, thanks for that, I had no idea CRT’s could still be repaired, seems like a rare and expensive skill

I wonder if I could send my old Sony Trinitron there..

Then what about the new builds?
On previous threads I’ve learned that new 763Fs are still built with CRT screens, these upgrades can only be excused by the customers after delivery. What about in the future?

You can click the little "report post" icon and ask for deletion.

Self-deletion turns off after 30 minutes I think.

There are no AA 763s in the desert.

Refurbishment is possible, but it is cost / benefit exercise.

This I do not know. I referred to the information in YT video. Maybe, CRT screen were already produced in a sufficient number to cover existing line? I presume that more CRTs are produced in a couple of months than what is needed for outstanding 93 B767 orders.

All current delivered 767-300F's and KC-46A's are delivered with LCD's installed.
Note :
L/N 1090 C/N 43548 B767-32SF N129FE FEDEX (VT580) was the first 767-300F with LDS factory certified installation.
All LDS equipped 767-32SF’s, delivered before L/N 1090 and after L/N 1058- N101FE, are certified according STC ST01750WI (the first four were actual delivered with CRT's and later modified with LDS)
The first LDS certified for UPS and delivered straight from the FAL is L/N 1180 C/N 65788 B767-34AF N365UP UNITED PARCEL SERVICE (VR293)
Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

It’s a pretty big thing within our 756 fleet to dim the screens after nearly every flight, even if the plane is going back out shortly. It’s second nature to finish the parking checklist and then dim all the screens. It’s supposed to save wear on them and keep the temperature down. Thankfully we haven’t had any issues of running low on screens, to my knowledge.

UPS just completed retrofit of its 757/767 fleet so all of the CRTs from those jets will end up in the supply chain for other legacy users.
