Similar downwinds to different airports?

Wed Jun 09, 2021 3:31 am

Today, before thunderstorms struck the northeast USA, in the early afternoon, to avoid electrical storm activity to the west of EWR, but because the winds were basically down the 22s, EWR and LGA were sharing an arrival stream over the Hudson River, with EWR traffic from the south turning west before the George Washington Bridge, and LGA arrivals continuing a bit further before they turned, both at around 4000 to 5000 feet.

In general, is this ever seen anywhere else? Today appeared to be an outlier, before the thunderstorms rolled in causing a complete ground stop.

Usually LGA 22 arrivals get the Hudson River while EWR 22L/R arrivals go over northeast NJ. What happened today (or really yesterday now) with "sharing" the arrivals was due to necessity. Storms were over northeast NJ where EWR arrivals would normally be, forcing them further eastward. Some didn't make it, such as UAL463 which diverted to JFK and later shuttled back over to EWR. LGA and JFK were in the clear for some time while EWR was getting slammed. It was a day of interesting routings, not just in the terminal area but en route too.

The NY Bravo is unique. Throw in some IRROPS and it gets even more unique.
