Lockheed L-1011 and DC-10 at DCA?

Thu Jul 15, 2021 3:24 pm

I am wondering why the DC-10 and Lockheed L-1011 Tristar did not serve Washington National Airport with its short runway while they did serve La Guardia airport which also had short runways. Perhaps it is a boneheaded question.

I know that a DC-10 once made an emergency landing at DCA and that both LGA and DCA have regulations about who can use their airports, destinations, trip lengths and so on. Is this the reason?

Perhaps there was not enough passenger demand at DCA to merit a widebody service there? Thanks in advance for any information and opinions.

But doesn't LGA also have a perimeter rule?

Yes, but NYC generates much more traffic justifying the wide bodies

It's actually a pier/pilling loading limit for the runways, DCA is built on large part on landfill with pillings. EA would of flown shuttle A300s into DCA otherwise... They did demo it but it wasn't allowed. A UA Dc10 did make an emergency landing at DCA but I think that's the only exception.

I actually found a good article on the A300 and Washington National Airport ... "Eastern to Contest Ban on A-300" New York Times, November 24, 1981 [available online]. At the end of the article it notes that the FAA ban on the A-300 would apply to other widebody types.
