If no radar over the Atlantic, what is FlightAware?

Meaning, if Gander and Shanwick centers don't have radar over aircraft crossing the Atlantic (so I've heard plenty of times), is FlightAware just an estimate? Or are systems used by flightaware just "not reliable enough" to meet what I presume are ICAO standards needed for proper aircraft separation and control? Beats having no system? Or is this all just sensational fake news by the uneducated non-aviation public?

FlightAware and FlightRadar24 use a combination of ADS-B and estimated positions. Shannon and Gander still need radar identification to provide radar services.

Separation is certainly in place. However, the required separation is bigger over the Atlantic and other non-radar areas. It isn't just the Atlantic, either. For example, most of Australia doesn't have radar coverage.

With the advent of ADS-B and such, however, separation does not need to be as big as a few decades ago.

I don't know which plateform ATC uses to aggregate terrestrial and space based ADS-B data, but at airline level, Flightaware actually is compliant with the GADSS mandate and provides surveillance info to different IT providers used by airline NOCs for real time tracking.

FR24 also uses satellite to track planes. Those are shown as blue planes rather than the normal yellow ones (most often seen over the Atlantic and Pacific).
