What are the three vertical lines on the MD-11 radome?

Thu Sep 02, 2021 3:00 am

On head on photos of the MD-11, there are three metallic vertical lines. They are evenly spaced. Does anyone know what they are and what their function is?

Lightning strips or diverters. In theory they reduce the damage done by lightning strikes.

Lightning diverter strips. They provide a path for electricity to travel across the composite radome.

Thanks for that information. I kind of suspected something like that. I'm surprised they don't affect the functionality of the radar but I guess if they did, they wouldn't be there. Thanks again.

By the way, why are the capital letters CB above the middle flight deck windows?

CB are the last two characters of the tail number, in this case PH-KCB.

Such markings are for ground staff so they can have an easy reference as they can't see the registration markings from the terminal. More common is to have the last two characters painted on the nose gear doors. The actual registration markings are waaay up there and not easy to see when you're up close.

convair880mfan, in addition to aircraft ship number or registration on the nose gear doors, forward side of the fuselage, or above the flight deck, some airlines also paint the specific type of aircraft, i.e., 737-800, A330-200, etc, on the lower fuselage just below the radome. This will correspond with painted markings on the ramp to assist aircraft marshalers with proper jetway alignment as the aircraft approaches the gate area.

These strips are not repairable locally if they are damaged, such as segments missing or de-bonded, which does happen. They are sent back to the manufacturer or a certified repair station. On our MD's, if the strips are damaged in some way, the radome is sent to Nordam in Tulsa, OK.
