MD-90 7,000 fpm rate of climb?

Fri Sep 10, 2021 7:09 pm

I found this quote by Douglas test pilot G.R. 'Bear' Smith regarding the MD-90's first flight:

"Your climb rate from sea level to 10 or 15,000 feet is absolutely awesome . . .It's amazing. You are climbing at 5,6, 7,000 feet per minute with a 140,000-150,000 pound plane. That performance shows itself when you get to an airport that's got high altitude and you've got heavy weight and need a little extra thrust. You select the 28,000-pound-thrust rating and down the road you go. That's what the big engines are for. It's not to go faster at altitude, it's to get the weight airborne." (1)

Is 7,000 fpm typical during test flights for aircraft? Would 7,000 fpm be the maximum rate of climb for the MD-90 at the weights quoted?

Thanks in advance for any insight and information.

Imagine if they installed the V2500 with the 33,000 pound thrust rating...

Imagine an updated UDF concept. Those two testbeds Boeing bought are up to something.

That's at least 100 feet per second!

I mean we've seen the 737 MAX do it empty in those promotional videos before, no?

Talking to an air traffic controller in April-May-June-July 2020. He said everybody that was flying was climbing out at 7000fpm after takeoff flying around with no passengers on board even the RJs.

7,000 fpm is on the high side for the MD-90. It would have to be pretty empty (like on a first or early test flight). Typical climb rates at normal loads were more like around 3,000 to 3,500 fpm depending on density altitude. I was an MD-90 instructor for McDonnell Douglas at the Long Beach airport back in the day.

7,000 fpm is not unattainable for a lightly loaded MD11 in the middle of the night (little other traffic). 4,500-5,000 is routine
